Badgers

Badgers can be found in most parts of UK. The average male badger weighs 23lbs and is roughly 36inches in length, while female badgers are usually smaller than the males.

Badgers live in an underground labyrinth of tunnels called a sett. Their large claws are ideal for digging these complex tunnel systems, which have lots of chambers of varying sizes.

See our DVD 'Sett on the Heath' if you are interested in badgers. It features outstanding footage, all shot in broad daylight.

badgers

Endangered

Bears and Wolves used to be the badger’s main predator, but in this day and age, man is their only real enemy. Presently there are about 300,000 thousand badgers in the UK. However, over 45,000 badgers are killed in road accidents every year.

Badgers have been protected by law since The Badger Act was introduced in 1992. However, some people still believe that killing badgers is a sport and torment these lovely animals in terrible ways. For these reasons, badgers are endangered in many parts of the country.

If you know the whereabouts of a badger sett, please report it to your local badger trust so that it can be recorded and protected. If you see anyone acting suspiciously around a badger sett and believe they are there to harm or capture the badgers, you must call the Police and RSPCA to report this immediately.

Badger Footage

Have a look at this footage of our local sett and see how tame these badgers are. There is more of our video footage of the badgers and other local wildlife in The Viewing Room.

We have produced a feature length DVD in conjunction with the Dorset Branch of the Badger Trust, which is now available. Have a look in our Catalog for more information.

To find your local badger group, have a look at the main Badger Trust website where you can also find more detailed information and advice about what to do if you encounter badgers or a badger sett.
