Attracting Bullfinches to your garden
The Bullfinch is one of our favourite birds. We count our selves lucky as everyday we have Mr. and Mrs. Bullfinch feeding on our window feeder. We sit in our lounge and wonder how many other
people are able to enjoy watching bullfinches at such close quarters.
To attract Bullfinches to your garden we recommend filling your bird feeder with:
Black sunflower seed Sunflower hearts
As for plants in your garden, leave some to go to seed, such as Forget-me-not and Honesty. Bullfinches absolutely love the seed from these plants, even the much-maligned dock may, if left alone, can attract a hungry bullfinch.
Although frequently spotted where we live in the south and east of the UK, the Bullfinch is rapidly declining in population and is now an official 'Red List' species. Some sources suggest that there was a 62% decline in Bullfinch numbers in a 25 year period (1972 - 1996). There have been a number of suggestions as to why they have been affected so badly. Declining numbers have mainly been attributed to the loss of straggling hedges, which are their preferred nesting sites.
